I was lucky to notice this small snake along the trail. It kept very still, and I might have easily missed it. It was very small, taking up no more space than my outspread hand.
I have not been able to identify it. My best guess is that it is a juvenile something. Possibly a juvenile northern water snake or a juvenile black racer.
Thanks for the input! Have you seen these before? Yeah, it looks much more gray than the ones I've seen online. And it wasn't near any water, so far as I could tell, which gave me some doubts.
ReplyDeleteOr a Pine Snake. It looks just like a pine snake I saw last weekend. I don't know how to post images (I got an OK pic of him) but here is a shot from UGA.

Richard, thanks for your comment; but it seems unlikely that this was a pine snake. The link you posted at U Georgia says the pine snake only ranges as far north as NJ, while my photo was taken in MA.
